MASTER'S  DEGREE PROGRAMME IN LIVE ART AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES 120 cr.

The language of instruction in the MA programme is English.

The MA Degree Programme in Live Art and Performance
Studies is a meeting place for students with a basic training in
various fields of art. It is designed for art students with experience
in live art and performance art who are interested in performance
studies and willing to develop their research skills alongside their
artistic work. The language of instruction in the programme is
English.

The objective of the programme is to develop forward-looking
artists familiar with tradition who can create new kinds of
live art and performance art on the contemporary art scene
and engage in the international performance studies discourse.
The purpose is to establish an interesting and productive
relationship between theory and practice and to combine
critical thinking and open-minded experimentation in both
artistic work and practice-based research.

The international Advisory Board of the MA Programme
includes the following artists and scholars:
PhD. Ray Langebach
Dr. Heike Roms
Dr. Helge Meyer
Producer Christopher Hewitt,

2011 E / LAPS – 10 Years of Live Art and Performance Art
at the Theatre Academy

In 2001 the MA degree programme in Performance Art and
Theory was founded as a pilot project called ESTAITE at the Theatre Academy. The E -program was regularized in 2003 and has since
2009 functioned in English, with the name MA Degree Programme
in Live Art and Performance Studies (LAPS). In ten years many
things have changed, degree requirements have developed, books
have been published, festivals have been organised. Some things
have nevertheless recurred. Every second year new students have
been selected, and at the end of their first autumn term they have
prepared performances as part of a joint Night of Live Art in one
of the Studios at Teak. There have been other performances,
of course, collaborative projects, and thesis projects. The first
small scale performances, however, have always seemed important

The first group of students began in autumn 2001 and prepared
their ”own performances” at the end of the autumn in December.
Julius Elo, Terike Haapoja, Minna Harri, Siri Kolu, Cecile Orblin
and Pilvi Porkola all directed or performed their independent
works. The second course (Kaisa Illukka, Elina Latva and
Nora Lähteenmäki now Rinne) prepared their performances
in October 2003 at the end of their first autumn term as part
of a joint Night of Live Art, which was invited to festivals
in Brno and Amsterdam. The third course (Anna Cadia, Heidi
Fast, Sini Haapalinna, Essi Kausalainen and Satu Palokangas)
performed their Night of Live Art in November 2005 and the
fourth course (Marko Alastalo, Touko Heikkinen, Kristina
Junttila, Leena Kela, Karolina Kucia and Johanna MacDonald)
showed their first performances in November 2007. The first
international LAPS course (Suvadeep Das, Christina Georgiou,
Sari TM Kivinen, Katariina Mylläri, Ilka Theurich and Tuuli
Tubin) performed their works in December 2009 with the title
Three Nights of Live Art.

And now it is the turn of the sixth course, or the second LAPS
course. Juha Forss, Ellen Jeffrey, Jenni Kokkomäki and Saša
Rajšic will appear 8th, 9th and 10th December 2011.

Professor of Performance Art and Theory Annette Arlander
