The degree programme (BA) in dance includes three dance works, an artistic project and some demonstration performances.Taking part in these productions aims to equip students with a wide range of skills that can then be employed in different roles in the field of contemporary dance. The overall aim is that the students develop an original, creative and open relationship to dance art together with abilites to work with others in creative processes. In the first year the students perform demonstrations of their own solo choreographies that are developed from a movement analysis course. The aims for the group performance in the spring are that the students familiarise themselves with the technical and performative challenges of the movement-oriented composition tradition. In the autumn of the second year, students perform both in a work based on improvisation and in a demonstration of the theatre workshop. In the spring, there will be a dance work where the conception of choregraphic starting points and methods will be broadened. Building on their previously acquired experience of choreogroahic methods and practices, students will explore further the potentials of choreographic scores as the structural basis for dance works and the challenges that these present for dancers. |
The third year will start with the dance work created in collaboration
of the second year MA choreographer students and designers from the
light-, sound-, set-, and costume design programmes. The aims for this
collaboration is to get together the generation of students from various
disciplines and to deepen their understanding of all the different
aspects of a dance work from the starting idea to the completed work and
the performances. The work accomplished in the spring of the third year could be dancer’s work in a dance piece, own choreography/studio performance or other artistic project. In this work the student will show his/her independency and maturity as an artist. The student will understand the cognitive and artistic context of the work and will be able to articulate the aims of the work in the artistic execution. The written reflection of the artistic project will form the significant part of the BA degree thesis. |

In the dancer’s Master’s programme students are performing in three different dance works. The targeted aims are that the students should build up their professional competence so that it is wide-ranging, versatile and at the same time differentiated. They should have a profound understanding of the structure of the dancer’s work, the creative working process, and the specific and various ways and genres of performing. In the autumn of the first year the students will create their own solo work, where they work with their own movement and its meanings, thus perceiving their unique identity as dancers. |
In the second work in the
spring the students should gain a more profound understanding of the
dancer’s work in performances or projects produced together with
choreography students. The artistic part of the thesis is done in the spring of the second year. Students should demonstrate an overall mastery of the dancer’s work in a dance production, which may be the work of a dance group within the Department, the work of a choreography student or practical training as dancer in a professional group. |

In the choreographer’s Master’s programme the students are creating four own dance works where the themes of previous courses are being applied. The targeted competencies are that the students’ should have a personal, creative and analytic conception of the multidimensional ways in which choreography acquires meaning as an art. They will be able to plan and realise choreographic works as well as participate in creative interaction with an artistic work group. In the autumn of the first year the students will create a solo performance for themselves, in which they adapt the basics of choreography studies, their lived world and the methods relating to the genre of autobiographical performance. In the spring the students will plan and carry through a small-scale work or a series of choreographic studies where studies where they ‘converse’ creatively with various traditions of composition as well as are capable of |
creative interaction with they fellow students in dancer’s MA
program. In the autumn of the second year the students will create a work together with light-, sound-, set-, and costume design students as well as with 3rd year BA dance students. They should be able to participate productively, systematically and in a goal-oriented way in an artistic group and be able to form a picture of all the different areas of a work and its environment in terms of content, production and structure. The last work is the artistic part of the Master’s thesis. It demonstrates that students are capable of independent artistic work. They should be able to create a work that embraces all the stages of choreographic work and gives an idea of the students’ abilities to act as a professional choreographer and their potential for finding their own identity as an artist. |
